Biology A Level gives you the foundations you need for a wide range of science-based courses at University.
The critical thinking, data analysis and investigative skills you will learn here can be applied to almost all careers in the field. So, even if you’re not quite sure what industry you’d like to work in just yet, you can be positive you will have the skills and confidence to succeed!
Course Content
Biology looks at how living organisms function, both animals (including us humans) and plants.
The A Level Biology course takes you from the microscopic world of the cell, through to the global impact of man on our environment, exploring recent scientific developments and technological advances.
It will be an incredible journey!
In Year 12, you will learn about:

Biological Molecules

Organisms Exchange Substances with Their Environment

Genetic Information, Variation and Relationships between Organisms.
In Year 13, you will learn about:

Energy Transfers in and Between Organisms

Organisms Respond to Changes in their Internal and External Environment

Genetics, Populations, Evolution and Ecosystems

The Control of Gene Expression.
But you won’t just be learning from books – all students will have opportunities to use many pieces of equipment and demonstrate practical techniques, especially as part of your CPAC assessment.
How will I be assessed?
Exam 1
Any content from topics 1–4, including relevant practical skills.

Written exam: 2 hours, 91 marks, 35% of A Level.
76 marks: A mixture of short and long answer questions.
15 marks: Extended response questions.
Exam 2
Any content from topics 5–8, including relevant practical skills.

Written exam: 2 hours, 91 marks, 35% of A Level.
76 marks: A mixture of short and long answer questions.
15 marks: Comprehension question.
Exam 3
Any content from topics 1–8, including relevant practical skills.

Written exam: 2 hours, 78 marks, 30% of A Level.
38 marks: Structured questions, including practical techniques.
15 marks: Critical analysis of given experimental data.
25 marks: One essay from a choice of two titles.
What are the entry requirements?
5 GCSEs grade 5 or above as well as grade 6 in English Language, Maths and Science.
